Did you know? #1 – Tschüs

Did you know that the German farewell expression Tschüs (also tschüss or older tschüß) came from Missingsch? The Low Saxon farewell expression was “adjüüs” and is related with the Romanic expressions adieu, adiós, etc. The voiced /ʒ/, pronounced and written like the French (“Journal”), became voiceless /ʃ/ in Missingsch. From this, it became “atschüüs” and later simply “tschüüs”. Meanwhile, this farewell expression became common and normal in most parts of the German speaking area.
